Importance of soil testing

  • Adapt the system to the type of terrain
  • Compliance with regulations: requirement Q-2, r.22.
  • Avoid costly mistakes: a poorly designed system can lead to expensive corrective work.
  • Preserve ecosystems: the Ottawa River and regional lakes (Blue Sea, Lac Simon, Lac Philippe) are sensitive.

Who is Soluo?

Soluo is a multidisciplinary team of 35 septic system experts, operating across all regions of Québec. Since 1995, the team has inspected, designed, and installed more than 500 septic systems every year.

Steps of the Soluo soil test

This step consists of studying the relief and characteristics of the land. The slope, the distances between the house, the well and bodies of water are assessed, as well as the presence of sensitive areas such as streams or marshes.

Whether the land is in the mountains in Chelsea, on a lakeshore in Val-des-Monts, or on a large agricultural property in Papineauville, this analysis makes it possible to adapt the project to the actual conditions of the site and to the environmental requirements specific to each sector of the Outaouais.

The percolation test measures the speed at which water infiltrates into the soil. Carried out directly on site, it determines whether the soil is suitable for a conventional septic system or whether a specialized solution should be considered.

For example, a sandy soil in Cantley will filter much faster than a clay soil in Gatineau. This data is essential to ensure the durability and compliance of the system.

This analysis determines the proportion of sand, silt and clay in the soil. Conditions vary greatly from one area to another: the rocky soils of Wakefield, the forested lands of L’Ange-Gardien, or the wet areas near Montebello all require different approaches.

This step ensures that the choice of system will be perfectly suited to the characteristics of the land.

Once the analyses are completed, a comprehensive report is prepared and sent to the municipality concerned (e.g. Val-des-Monts, Chelsea, Cantley, La Pêche, Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette).

This document presents the technical results, calculations and recommendations according to the Regulation Q-2, r.22. It is essential to obtain the septic installation permit required before work begins.

After the analysis, tailor-made advice is offered based on the nature of the soil, the topography and the client’s needs.

For example, a cottage near Lac Simon may require a compact tertiary treatment system, whereas a permanent residence in Gatineau could be well served by a conventional system with a leaching field.

The goal is always the same: to offer a durable, high-performance solution adapted to the realities of the soil in Outaouais.

FAQ

In general, a complete soil test (including topographic analysis, percolation test and granulometric analysis) takes between 1 and 2 hours on site, depending on the complexity of the site.
The time it takes to receive the final report submitted to the municipality usually varies between 5 and 10 business days.

Yes, the soil test is mandatory for any new septic installation or the replacement of an existing system, as required by the Regulation Q-2, r.22 of the Quebec Ministry of the Environment.

The municipalities of the Outaouais, such as Cantley, Papineauville, Val-des-Monts or Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette, systematically require an engineering or licensed technologist report before issuing a permit.
This requirement ensures that the chosen system will be safe, durable and respectful of the local environment.

The price of a soil test varies depending on the location, the complexity of the land and the type of analysis required. In Outaouais, the cost generally ranges between $1,250 and $1,450, including:

  • the site visit;

  • the percolation and sampling tests;

  • the granulometric analysis in the laboratory;

  • and the production of the official report for the municipality.

For example, a simple test on an accessible plot in Masson-Angers will often be less expensive than a full assessment in a rocky area in Lac-Sainte-Marie.
This amount may also vary depending on travel and the distance from major centres such as Gatineau.
